Overview: What is a dragon?

Dragons (Family Draconiformes), wyrms, serpents; just a handful of many names for a diverse class of magical beast. Science currently recognizes 10 Lineages of Greater Dragon, and dozens of lesser "dragon kin" found all across the world. Uniting all of them are their serpentine grace, inborn magical abilities, and a fierce, alien intelligence. All greater dragons, and many of their lesser kin are believed to be sentient, ergo they may be reasoned with. Gaining a better understanding of induvidual and species-wide behaviors is crucial to mitigating humanoid-dragon conflict, in addition to broadening our appreciation of the wondrous nature of dragons. As is common to organisms with highly thaumic biology, their origins are difficult to trace. Did they evolve naturally, as reputable naturalists now believe to be the source of most variety in the kingdom of plants and beasts, or were they molded by the hands of of some forgotten deity? There is evidence to both thoeries.
